How small a bit are you trying to use?
Seems to me they should mesh small enough to get to all but the tiniest
of bits.

I've got a Walker Turner 15" bench drill press with a 1/2"
chuck. My problem comes when I want to drill a small hole; the chuck
'fingers' will not contract far enough to grab the small drill bits. Is
this the way the chuck is supposed to work (could be a defective unit
since I got it 'well' used by the previous DPO; the shaft was bent) or
do I need a smaller chuck to chuck into the larger chuck??
