Have you tried swappping the sparkplug and wire? A fouled plug is not always
obvious.

Sounds to me like your putting the distributor in ahead of the firing
order, so you are only getting spark to the second cylinder, and missing
the first one. If you rotate the dist. back some, you may retard the
timing enough to pick up the first cylinder.
