I got my project 71 Ambo to Saturday morning, enough so I thought I
could take it down my long driveway to see how it will ride. The
previous owner had the bike in his barn since the 80's (hence the low
8100 miles) and said it always rode great so I was not anticipating any
real mechanical problems except the usual with any thing that has sat
for over 20 years.

I pulled the clutch lever and went to put the bike into gear and the
shift lever will not move up or down into any gear. I never even thought

about trying the shifter until I got the bike to run! It feels and
sounds like the clutch is working fine and that really shouldn't have
anything to do about putting the bike into gear using the shift lever
(pedal). I know on my Cal II you can move the lever through the gears
just sitting still with the bike off.

Any suggestions on what to look for and how to fix the shifting problem?

Also, the bike is very original except that a lot of the chrome and
metal items are rusty from sitting in the barn that really had
deteriorated over the years. I have a set of stock set of rear shock
springs to replace the rusty one on the bike. How do I get the old
springs off the rear shocks and replace them with the better ones?

Thanks,

Lenny Seidman
