Hi Jack,
You didn't happen to adjust the valves recently did you? If you have, maybe they're a bit too tight? A friend had the same symtoms on his '79 SP and it turned out the valves had been set tight. Just a thought.

Have you tried adjusting the mixture screws? Is the timing set correctly? Cheers,

Charlie.

This list has been very helpful in identifying solutions when I get a
problem, so here's the latest request.

The Eldo has DelOrto carbs, new cylinders, and runs like a champ. However,
it was off the road for a few weeks recently while I rebuilt the forks. When
I put it back on the road, I was unable to properly adjust the carbs. I use
a TwinMax to synch them so they are dead on as the slides open. However, the
idle is a problem. Here are the symptoms:

1. Adjusting the throttle stop screws seems to go from no effect to a rapid
increase in idle speed - sort of like a light switch.

2. Riding shows less retarding effect when closing the throttle - just my gut
(or butt) feeling.

3. Also on deceleration, there is a fair bit of banging and popping going on
in the exhaust.

4. I am able to keep the engine running at idle only by careful use of the
throttle. Again, if I use the throttle stop screws to increase idle speed,
it goes to 2K rpm instantly.

What does this indicate? Timing is per spec and there seem to be no intake
leaks. I have a balance hose connecting the two intake manifolds. There is
slack in choke and throttle slide cables.

I just lubed the throttle cables and replaced the one from the throttle to
the splitter as it had a minor fraying condition. The slides return smartly
to the closed positions when the throttle is released with the engine off.

I'm thinking there is extra fuel getting into the carb, possible thru the
choke circuit. If that is so, fuel mileage should be poor, but I hardly ever
check it.

Waddya think? Methinks I am overlooking the obvious.

TIA!
