Subject: speedo cable question

In the process of restoring the '69 Ambo, I filled in the area where the
PO hacked up the side cover to take the speedo cable out. I now realize
that there's supposed to be a hole there for the cable to go through,
although how you get the big ends of the cable through the little hole
mystifies me.
What's up with that?
