Keith,
Something sounds wrong. You should not have to make such a large adjustment
to a motor that was running well before adjustment.
Adjustments should be right at TDC. I only did mine once but the
adjustments were only a few thousandths to hit the spec,
Its been a while since I did it, I cant recall the exact procedure.
I wouldnt fire it up until it was correct.
