Keith; Where do you live in NJ? I am in Delaware not to far away possibly.
Please excuse my rambling if you have already tried this.
First,did you check TDC by looking to see if the piston is near the top and
checking to see if you are on the compression stroke? the distributor rotor
will be pointed towards that side you are adjusting if it is correct or as
cookie mentioned try the finger over the plug hole method.
Second are you using the correct demensions? IE 0.15mm (.059in)for inlet,
0.25mm (.098in)for exhust as per my 850 shop manual.

Unless your sure you have it correct I would not start the engine.
