Don,

If the wheel is loose your problem will be in the bearings. I can't imagine
a swing arm being that loose.

Stock wheel bearings are unobtainable but thankfully Moto International has
a kit that will allow you to install a standard bearing.

Swing arm bearings are easy to get.

The wheel bearing play is adjusted by shims. Actually pretty easy to do with
a little experience. You will need to rig up something that will allow you
to tighten the hub so you can test the play in the bearings without having
to reinstall on the bike.

I have heard different theories on how much play should be in there. Some
say just a hint of play other say none at all. I find the range somewhere in
the middle.

Be sure your swing arm bearings are nice and tight and the swing arm
centered in the frame.

Be sure to get everything sound in the back end. I believe that much of the
wobbles on these bnikes comes from rear end loosness.

Good luck...Ian

Hi Guys,
Iam new to riding Moto Guzzis.I have a 73 Eldo with unknown miles.Iam
the guy with the oil loss problem.
The bike has vibration in the foot pegs.I think it is more than
possibly some normal vibration.A friend said to check rear wheel play
with the bike on its centerstand and in gear.I rocked the wheel back and
forth and found about 4 inches of play :-(.I have never had any of the
driveline apart. The PO replaced the u-joints about 5 years ago with used
parts. It sounds like another expensive problem.
Iam having a major learning experience with my first Guzzi.I guess Iam
the unfortunate buyer who will have to do some major repairs.I love the
motorcycle and plan to get it fixed up so I can enjoy riding it.What
else in the driveline should I pay attention too for problems?
