How near the top? The actual seal lives in the chrome part that threads
on the lower black steel section. The cap on top, that is tightened to
pull the taper up into the top triple clamp, has an o-ring that could be
bad, allowing a leak, but if ALL your fork oil is gone, I doubt it would
all has escaped at the top.

There is also a thin o-ring that seals the chromed seal holder to the
steel lower.

If you're going to do this, I'd pull the wheel, fender, etc. and yank
the legs out.

 Tom and Fred,
By the way, my forks leak near the top, that is the oil starts way at
the
top and runs down. I have never seen oil near the bottom of the forks (
I
always wipe off excess oil before it can get to the bottom of the
forks).
So, before I go after the wrong problem is this the fork seal or is it
something else wrong with the fork? Thanks again, Bob

 Bob,

The degree of ease or difficulty depends on how handy you are and what
tools you end up needing. If you're fairly good with a wrench it should
be no big deal to get the forks off the bike. Removing the collars that
contain the seals can be a pain if you don't have the wrench, but
sometimes they just come apart without a lot of sweating and straining.
The seals themselves are nothing special, just generic metric oil seals.
Putting the forks back on the bike can be challenging without the aid of
the tool to draw the tubes back up into the upper clamp.

Here's a question. How easy/difficult is it to change the fork seals
on

a 69 Ambo.? I find I have no oil left in my forks. Do I need special
tools? Bob
