Sometimes the higher voltage makes it easier to light lean mixtures.
Lean mixtures can make more horsepower WHEN YOU CAN LIGHT THEM ! We
usually have to run a bit rich because we are limited by our Kettering
igniton's ability to light the lean mixture. The other problem with air
cooled engines is cooling. Liquid cooled engines can an do make good use
of the electronic ignition and the precise mixture control of fuel
injection. Air cooled engines usually need a little more latitude for
the sake of adequate cooling.

Electronic ignitions ? most of the time I have spent at the side of
the road with other peoples dead or near dead bikes could be billed to
the damn things. Points work and work well. They last for 25,000 to
50,000 miles haven't let me down yet.

Just can't rationalize an electronic ignition on
a Loop, setting the points and timing is so easy and doesn't need to be
done
all that often. It would be different if it gave tremendous performance
gains, but I doubt that it does.

I have been debating this myself. A Guzzi mechanic has been trying to
convince me that an electronic ignition on my race bike would be worth
several more horse power. I find this hard to believe, maybe it would
run a
little more efficient but more actual horse power?

I take mine anywhere without worrying WITHOUT disc brakes ! But then
again I never worried on ANY bike ,even the BRIT bikes with LUCAS
electrics !And they NEVER let me down.At least since 1966 !
