The data plate may or may not be glued on, which is another obstacle
to getting it off without destroying it. It is aluminum, and can be
rolled flat again, and the black paint that you scratched while doing
any of the above can be touched up with a black indelible sharpie

Thanks. It worked quite well. The plate had been contact cemented on but
cam off nicely using the chisel to gently lift up.
