There is an update to perform on the clutch pushrod seal. You have to remove the old conical or plastic sleeve seal and replace it with a set of 6 o-rings. This is all addressed in Guzziology, and the o-rings are a wierd size (or so Dave says). The problem you might encounter is if the old seals stay in the tube when you pull the pushrod out, you may have trouble getting them out without pulling the trans. I agree that you have to really pay attention to the needle bearings, I had a couple try to commit suicide, but I caught them still on my worktable.

Your noise problem could be caused by excessive end play on the crank, causing the pulley to rub against the timing cover, or possibly the pulley was installed incorrectly(?), maybe one side has more offset than the other and is rubbing.

Maybe your rear oil leak is caused by the main bearing flange and not just the bolts. I have heard and read (In Guzziology I think) that if the flange is pulled in tight by the bolts rather than being seated firmly, then torqued, you can damage the seal and cause leaks. (Possible that the excessive endplay, if there is any, could be caused by an improperly installed flange)

I know it's a pain, but maybe you should remove the trans for 2 reasons: to do the O-ring update and to verify where the oil leak is coming from.

73 Eldo - still mostly in pieces, though I got engine and trans together finally.
