Hi David,
You must have the earlier type of throwout bearing which was smaller in diameter and had ball-bearings in a cage instead of needle bearings. I have a NOS outer race for the earlier type and it does indeed have a groove for the balls to run in. Guzziology (and most everyone else) recommends that you update to the later type. Talk to Mark @ Moto Guzzi Classics, I'm sure he can guide you down the righteous pathway. :-)Cheers,
