Keith,
I don't know where you live but I bet it's not in New York.
Anyway, do you have access to a stethoscope to listen around the block and
focus in on the sound? Bob

Fired up the beast with cover off, put a towel up front to catch the oil
mess. The clacking is coming from the engine case indeed, almost sounds
like the camshaft area behind the pulley in the timing chest. Can't be
the gen as it is not hooked up. Looks like a teardown.

Broke the nut loose on the crank, got the timing chest off, nada to be
found as far as I can tell. All teeth on the gears look fine. There is
some minor movement on the oil pump gear, but nothing that would cause
the clatter I am hearing. Ordered up a new cover gasket and crank seal
for the cover and will re-assemble. Checked the valves and they appear
OK, clearance is right on the money. Did notice the left plug was
blackish and slightly wet while the right one was perfect, could just be

a carb adjustment on the left side. Have no clue what to do from here
except hand this off to a professional. I wish somebody lived nearby
who could stop by, take a listen, and tell what the clack is wrong with
her. Perhaps it is the rod bearings, who knows. I give up.
