Just checking in with you all for a sanity check

The Ambo was just not starting well last few weeks. Hit the button, click.
Hit it again and it cranks and fires.
I thought maybe the solenoid may be going so I replaced it. Still did the
same click and start. I rode it a few more times.

After a week the battery is stone dead. Pulled out battery. I did some
checking with the meter and found that I had a direct short between the
positive and neg terminals on the battery cables. Even with the ign switch
off..

Re checked the new solenoid, seems I wired it wrong, when I wired it right,
the short to ground was gone. Now the weird thing is that the short across
the solenoid was from the hot side of the voltage regulator to the starter
solenoid.

If so then, why wouldn't the bike have been wanting to crank all the time?

This is not a major thing, just curious.
Thanks
