The covers tend to split at the bolt holes. My bet is the strip was for that
reason.

 I used studs and nice thick washers, shimmed the front, and installed
the generator on the Eldo yesterday. With all 5 shims between the lower
pulley halves the belt was too loose. One shim removed is just about
right.

I cleaned up the black plastic generator cover, and there are some steel
strips in the boxes that were installed along the sides of that cover,
using the small screws that hold the cover to the generator mount.
Chrome (rusty) about an inch wide, and slightly longer than the plastic
cover. Any ideas what these were for?
