hi again, ya'll!
after talkin' to cousin Ian on the phone tonite, i realized that i missed
a ton of emails [never got 'em]. sooooo, i went to 'my topica' and read them
there. thanks, guys! no freakin' prize needed! working on someone's well
cared for bike is a rare priveledge, and helping out is even more rare,
especially in this crowd. guzzi- folk are unbelievably self sufficient, as a
rule. and so, what an honor! it was fun!
Hi, Cam! how long have you been lurking here? i have an idea- put a
pillow on your fender, and have keith ride on the back to bartonsville, then
you dudes can ride home together. heck, it's only 3 hours! :>)
ok, Keith- i'll ride Patience [really, she's impatience- wants to
ruuuuuuuun!] to Avon- your spiffy hat is there [does Cam want 1 ? ] when do
ya want your bike back?
i was here-always been here, but there's other guys that are real
wizards- sorry they didn't come thru for ya. sorry ya got stuck with me. it
was an easy fix. and it was fun. thank you!
ii have a line on a '71 ambo, relatively cheep, and nearby. have to do
somethin' creative, but i hear her [yep, one of those!] calling to me. what
to do? I'd like to build another loop, and give her to Tom, a cousin who is
a great guy, but unlucky. something tells me, that if he had something nice
to ride, that he would remember his old self......

Subject: RR 1000: Events for 2003 includes Iron Butt Rally in USA

Details for entering the Iron Butt Rally in the USA are below.

Please note also that the following Iron Butt Association of Ireland events
have been scheduled:

29 March 2003 IBAI Butt Nite Dusk to dawn 500/12 Venue: Dublin

19-21 June IBAI Irish Rally 24 hour event Venue:
Banagher, Co. Offaly

28 Sept IBAI Mini Butt Daytime 500/12 Venue:
Dublin

and
Date to be announced: A European Rally, start & finish in the Paris area
with a chance to do up to 1,500 miles in 24 or 36 hours, virtually all on
French autoroutes.

Details of the American Iron Butt event are as follows:

2003 Iron Butt Rally Registration

The 2003 Iron Butt Rally will take off on Monday, August 11, 2003 from
Missoula, Montana. The rally will run counterclockwise with checkpoints in
California, Florida and Maine. It will return to Missoula 11 days later on
Friday, August 22. Please note, the rally is running two weeks earlier in
the year then our tradition of targeting the middle of the Iron Butt to be
over the Labor Day weekend.

We are also holding the drawing almost one year later than tradition to try
and minimize all the roster changes that are an administrative nightmare
for us. Please note that positions are extremely limited and not everyone
who seeks to enter the rally will be able to find a spot. We wish we could
accommodate each applicant, but unfortunately, we do have limited
facilities to conduct the rally.

The entry fee for the 2003 Iron Butt Rally will be $1,125 (U.S. Funds)
payable in two parts. If you are drawn for the rally (information on how to
enter the drawing follows), to hold a position, the initial deposit of $500
will be due January 15, 2003 with the remaining $625 fee due May 15, 2003.
Please note, NO money is due with this registration form. There is NO
application fee. Only if you are drawn and secure a place on the start line
will you need to pay.

Unfortunately, we will not be able to accommodate all applicants. For
example, in 2000, over 1,100 people applied for 125 available positions in
the 2001 Iron Butt. To try and be as fair as possible, on or about November
25, 2002 a drawing will be held for available positions. Everyone, with the
exception of several positions to be used at the Rallymasters' discretion
(for example, interesting antique motorcycle attempts, some drawing passes
distributed to some key rallies the IBA entered agreements with to promote
safe long distance rallies and members of the press) will have to pass
through the drawing.

Except for the above-noted exceptions, all entries will be divided into
three categories (boxes) - Iron Butt Rally veterans, rally workers from
previous rallies and new riders. The first part of the drawing will
randomly take thirty envelopes from the veterans box and allocate positions
for those riders. Should more than thirty veterans apply, the remaining
envelopes will be placed in the new rider box and it will be shuffled (that
means in effect, that veterans have two chances to be drawn).

Five positions will be drawn for those people who worked on previous Iron
Butt Rallies. Should more than five workers apply, the remaining volunteer
envelopes will be placed in the new rider box and it will be shuffled (that
means in effect, past-volunteers also have two chances to be drawn).

While the exact number of entries has not been determined, we will draw and
number each persons entry in drawing order. For example, if the 2003 event
has 80 entries (we will determine the exact number by November 20, 2002),
entry number 81 and higher will be placed on a waiting list. During the
course of 2003, should a competitor withdraw, entry 81 would be the first
person to be offered that rider's position on the starting line. The person
with wait list number 82 would be the second person to receive an offer to
fill an open slot and so on. As long as you provide the requested
self-addressed, self-stamped envelopes OR an e-mail address, everyone who
applies will receive a letter notifying them that their entry was drawn and
if not, what their position is on the wait list.

If you are drawn for the rally, you have until January 15, 2003 to get the
deposit to the Iron Butt Association. After that date, we will offer your
position to the next person on the wait list. Please note, the $500 fee to
reserve a position on the starting line is NOT refundable. Under no
circumstances should you submit your fee if you are not certain that you
will be able to ride. This policy has been in effect since 1988 when so
many last-minute rider cancellations resulted in the cancellation of the
rally itself.

If you are unfamiliar with the mechanics of the rally, you should
immediately obtain a copy of Ron Ayres' book, Against the Wind (a very good
account of Ron's Iron Butt experience), and visit the Iron Butt
Association's web site at www.ironbutt.com and read the reports from the
2001, 1999, 1997 and 1995 rallies. You should also carefully study the
rules from 2001 at www.ironbutt.com/ibr/2001/2001rules.doc (a Microsoft
Word document) While the rules will change slightly for 2003, the only
major changes we anticipate are:

1. Minimum performance requirement

2. Revisions to allowed sponsorship

3. Suggestion to carry a GPS as some bonuses may contain GPS information

MINIMUM PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENT:

The "Hopeless Class" in the 2001 Iron Butt Rally surprised many of us.
Leonard Aron finished on a 1946 Indian Chief and, perhaps most surprisingly,
Paul Pelland finished on a 2001 Ural. In addition, a new benchmark was
established for the smallest displacement motorcycles to ever finish the
Rally by Keith Keating on a Suzuki GN125 and Paul Meredith on a Cagiva 125.
While I remain interested in seeing entries that increase the challenge of
completing the Rally, Keith and Paul have taken the quest to become the
finisher on the smallest displacement motorcycle beyond what I am
comfortable with. A new standard for minimum performance will therefore
apply to future Rallies.

The basic performance requirement will be for the motorcycle and rider to be
able to maintain a minimum speed of 65 mph on a long 7% grade under calm
wind conditions between sea level and 4,000 feet elevation. Seven percent
grades commonly occur on the Interstate highway system and many late model
line-haul trucks are able to maintain 65 mph on such grades when not fully
loaded. The new performance requirement will prevent participants in future
Rallies from unreasonably interfering with the normal flow of traffic and
creating an accident risk to themselves or others.

Although the basic performance requirement is a minimum speed on a grade,
there will be alternative criteria for demonstrating compliance. The
alternative criteria my be refined at a later date, however, the initial
criteria are as follows. Any production motorcycle with a wet weight of 900
pounds or less will be assumed to comply if it has an engine rated at 40
horsepower or more. Motorcycles rated at less than 40 horsepower must
demonstrate compliance during a road test. Compliance may be demonstrated
by maintaining a minimum of 65 mph on a 7% grade or by achieving a higher
speed on a level road under calm wind conditions. The required level road
speed will depend on the combined weight of the motorcycle and rider.

If you are attempting to enter the Iron Butt Rally on a motorcycle with
minimal power output, and would like a table that relates motorcycle and
rider weight to road speed on level ground, please contact
aus-@ironbutt.com AFTER the drawing (Tom will NOT answer e-mails on this
subject until your entry has been accepted). If you are concerned about
riding an under-powered motorcycle prior to entry, you may send a note to
me at knee-@ironbutt.com and we will work out getting it tested.

REVISIONS TO SPONSORSHIP RULES

United States Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart once said, "I can't
define pornography, but I know it when I see it." The Iron Butt Rally has
always been an amateur event but each year I see more and more people
trying to push the sponsorship guidelines. While I have no problem with
anyone trying to borrow a motorcycle for the Iron Butt or get a free set of
tires, we will no longer tolerate motorcycles with sponsorship stickers
from top to bottom. In other words, I have seen sponsorship-pornography
and I am the guy who is going to stomp it out (of the rally that is).

I have charged our internal rule makers to produce a set of guidelines to
measure acceptable levels of sponsorship. The new rules will place
restrictions on such mundane items as limiting the size and placement of
stickers on your motorcycle to the kind of support you may receive while on
the road. You can expect that if you are attempting to use sponsors to
finance your Iron Butt efforts you might be unable to enter or complete the
rally. If you plan on obtaining sponsorship, questions should be directed
to me at knee-@ironbutt.com, however, be warned that I will err on the
side against support.

GPS

In the tips area of the rules, we are going to suggest (but not require)
for you to carry a GPS as some bonuses may contain GPS information

You should also be aware that the rally will have bonuses in Canada. Due
to the tragic events of September 11, 2001, exit and entry from the United
States has become a hassle for some people. While we will attempt to place
bonuses near smaller border crossings (which may not get you across any
easier, it should cut down wait times), there is no guarantee that you will
be able to cross the border without incident. Such is the risk of
attempting a bonus that takes you across an international border.

You should also be aware that while the primary goal of the rally is to
ride to each of the four checkpoints and arrive on time, collecting
optional bonus points may require an extraordinary effort and bravery.
Earning bonus points can require long hikes (for example, a one-mile steep
uphill hike to an ice cave) or participation in other extreme activities
(in 1999, bonus points could be earned by riding an open air roller coaster
located on top of and on the outside of a 100 story tall building).

If all this talk about drawings, rules and regulations sound like we are
not a fun group, I assure you the Iron Butt is about friendship, loyalty,
trust and most of all, having a great time. The rules and guidelines we
have developed over the years are to keep the playing field level and to
keep the event fun. Some of the best memories of my life have been because
of the Iron Butt Rally and I assure you that you will ride away from the
rally a changed person with new life-long friends and some of the most
treasured memories of your life!
