The chrome covers hold the seals and hold the tubes in. There is also
an o-ring that seals the chrome seal holder to the steel lower slider.
There is a special tool (list member Stephen Brenton makes one) to
thread off the seal holder (don't use vise-grips!). A little heat helps
too.

MG Cycle and Moto Guzzi Classics can get you the seals and orings.
