hmmm... that's interesting.. there was quite a bit of gasket sealer slop. Maybe if my tensioner looks squeeky-clean (I'll replace it anyway).. I'll go with that theory. I've never done a timing case cover removal before.. but there's a first time for everything.. if you all arn't tiring of this discussion and want to throw me a few suggestion on replacing the tensioner.. I'd be grateful. I do have a new tensioner (valtek), gasket and the seal... also have a tool Steve Brenton made for me to hold the wheel while I break the 'big nut' free... am I on the right track?.. anyone know off hand what size socket I need... thanks, Bill

Could it be bits of old gasket material or old gasket sealing material(the hardening variety)? Since my Eldo has timing gears, I'm notfamiliar with a chain and it's tensioner. But old rubber can get to bepretty brittle especially when exposed to lots heat and time. BruceBill Cohoon wrote:
Is it the consensus that this stuff is probably pieces of my tensioner(I do have a chain) as Fred mentioned. If so, I guess I'll dive in witha new tensioner. Fred mentioned also maybe oil sludge.. does sludge takeon this brittle consistency... again I can break the stuff up with mythumb nail. Anyway... I guess no matter what, I need to check thetensioner... thanks to everyone for your suggestions..... Bill
