Mine is an "A" model, and I suspect it has the shorter (higher
numarically) gearing in the rear that V700's came with. Lacking a tach
(one of the traits of the early 750's) I'm only guessing. According to
the service manual I have for the bike + the owner's hand book, one
difference between a V750 and a V700 is the fact that on a V700 you
start it like a car by turning the key, on the V750 you push the button.
A big difference between a V750A and later 750's is the carburaters,
"A's" had round bores while later ones had square bore carb's. the
square bores gave an extra 5HP (60 rather than 55) but also required
more pressure to twist the throttle. The longer headlight bucket
explains why I had to modify the brackets on my Wixom fairing to make it
fit. I never stop learning about this bike!

 Lenny,

Early Ambos (1969 models) were really V700's with 750 cylinders. Much of
the
body work was V700, which included; longer headlight bucket, 700 style
tank,
700 battery covers, 700 tail light bracket. I believe early Ambos also
shifted on the right side.

Early Ambos were denoted with an "A" in front of the 5 digit serial
number.
All early Ambos that I have ever come across have serial number A12xxx.
Full
blown Ambos (I call them American Ambos) lost the "A" and started with
serial number 13xxx and went up to 22xxx.

Grab a copy of Greg Field's book "Moto Guzzi Big Twins" He does an
excellent
job of outlining the history with great pics.

Also, both are early Ambos but I never really compared the two. How can
you tell which style they are (differences between the 2 styles)?
