Hi Jack,
When the front brake on my '69 gets this way, I usually disassemble the front brake completely and clean everything. Then I reassemble lubing the shaft of the brake cams, both ends of the brake shoes and the linkage (all lightly!!!) with "Sta-Lube Extreme Pressure" (red) grease (or another disk brake rated grease). I usually use 220 grit sandpaper on both the shoes and drum just enough to break the glaze. FOR YOUR OWN HEALTH, USE A DUST MASK WHEN BLOWING OFF ANY COLLECTED DUST!

For another alternative to the stock shoes, check out:http://www.vintagebrake.com
Joe Kenny installed a set on Pat Galbraith's Ambo and has been pleased with the results. He said once they bed in fully they'll be even better! Cheers,

Charlie

Need a little help over here. The Eldo (2 leading shoe front brake) has a
horribly squeaky front brake and it doesn't stop very well either. The
lining material has what appears to be a high metallic content. If I remove
the front wheel, steel wool the drum surface, and sand the lining surface, I
am OK for a week or so. Then the squeaking starts again. Moisture is not a
contributing factor as I am in a dry (very damn dry) area. Adjustment is
such that both shoes are doing their fair share of the work. If it were not
for the rear brake, I would be a danger to myself and all others on the road.
With the new cylinders, etc., the bike runs very well ... now I just have to
figure out how to get the front brake involved in the process.

What do you suggest? I'll call Mark @ Classics tomorrow (Tuesday) but I
would like the list's input on this.
