I agree about the scratching - that's why I wrote carefully - the trick is to remove
the top layers, then use a soft cloth at the metal surface. But it is a "fiddly" job.
I also should have written OOOO steel wool, which is very fine.

I've found that steel wool can scratch chrome. Autosol is good for clean
chrome, and wonderful on aluminum castings that need polishing.

For burned on oil, oven cleaner (lye) does a great job and does nothing to
chrome. Autosol doesn't work too well on baked on grease, and using
something to scrape it off mostly will damage chrome..
