Mike:
As strange as it sounds, I've used Future floor polish on aluminum
and copper after buffing, it seems to last a long time. Just wipe on a
thin coat and let it dry. What causes it to dull is oxidation, and I
suppose what you want to do is find something that seals the metal, but
doesn't peel off or discolor.
I bought a Yamaha XS750 (triple) once from this woman, belonged to
her deceased husband. He had crashed one, bought a brand new one exactly
like it, swapped engines and put the new engine on the shelf and rode
with the old engine in the new bike. I guess that made sense, somehow.
The woman wanted to get rid of the bike so her son wouldn't get it.
I swapped them back, sold the old engine for what I paid for the lot
to a girl in Germany, then sold the bike for a grand. As I remember, the
aluminum was pretty crummy, took a lot of work to get it presentable.

Charlie, after the polishing do you need to put something on the alum to
protect it? did this once on a yamaha xs650 engine and it all turned dull,
brownish, just didn't last. looked good till I rode it a couple of years.
