I usually take the bearing out and rotate it to feel for any slack or
binding. Also look at the fit of the bearing into the swing arm as well
and
the fit of the Ujoint into the carrier bearing.

How do you remove the bearing w/o wrecking it? I'd say just get a new
one, even though the drum-brake bearing is a little more $$ than the
easily obtained disc version.
