on disassembling the shocks, I was told to turn the shock upside down and clamp it in a vise. compress spring (with a spring tool), then rotate the preload collar until the openings in the collars line up with the cams (or whatever they are called) on the shock body. then remove collar and CAREFULLY uncompress or remove springs.
