Richard,
No help on the U-joint, but I think the single wire indicator is
grounded through its base to the instrument panel. I think there is
also a wire from the instrument panel to the lower intstrument 'tray'
(I'm not sure what else you would call the lower part) that grounds the
instrument panel to the bike.

I'm going to be replacing the seals on the Ambo's gearbox. I've read
that you can hold the output shaft using an old u-joint. If anyone has
one I could use for this purpose, please let me know.
