Donny:
Looking at the oil like everyone says is a good idea, you might go one better and pull the oil pan off after you drain it and have a look around. It's simpler than pulling the heads, and you can get a better assesment of what's in the oil by examining and cleaning the sludge on the bottom of the pan.

Okay, so I've been hearing the horror stories about chrome peeling off
cylinders walls and trashing engines of bikes that spent a lot of time
sitting. I picked up my first Guzzi last week, a 1970 Ambo with 6200
miles. It obviously spent a lot of time in the garage, but was
supposedly started regularly. It runs well, but now I'm concerned about
destroying the motor by riding it. I did a compression test today with
the motor cold, both plugs out and throttle wide open and got a solid
180 lbs on each side. Does the fact that the bike has good and equal
compression indicate that the jugs are okay and the bike is safe to
ride? Is there something else I can check short of tearing the top end
down? I'd like to avoid unnecessary work and expense, but at the same
time I don't want to trash a good motor by pumping chrome flakes through

the oil passages.
