Hey, Greg -

What year is your Convert? It sounds like you have one with the really
heavy flywheel. They are very sedate in terms of throttle response
compared to the early ones with the sheet metal part. We had three converts
- two 76's with the light flywheel and a 1980 with the chunky one, and the
difference was like night and day. There really isn't any way to get the
heavy flywheel versions to rev with enthusiasm - maybe installing an 1100 cc
kit would help? You wouldn't want to do any of the normal hop-up things
like bigger carbs, hotter cam - that would just make it worse. Higher
compression/more displacement/torque cam would be the ticket, or have your
massive flywheel thinned down about 3/4. One thing that minimizes the
problem is to not use High range unless you're out on the open road - they
will cruise comfortably in Low up to 70 or so, anyway. I used to love
riding ours in the twisties - put it in Low and leave it there - you can
really fly on those things in the mountains. I embarrassed many people on
rice burners with mine. Another thing that is essential to any Guzzi twin
(and more so with a Convert) is careful carb balance - a slight unbalance
off idle and into the mid-range will really sap the power getting away from
a stop light, as I'm sure you are aware, since you also have an Ambassador.
It is also easy to have one cylinder a little out of time on the later
twins, which will have a similar result.

I'm looking forward to hearing about your trip - wish I was going (sigh).

so i been doing things right - no shifting/no clutch/ no nothing on my
convert. (5000 miles in last 3 months) like a giant moped, i love it. but
not as cool as my ambo, but it stops!.,. how can i improve throttle
response? i've had no problem at highway speeds. should i just deal with
0-40mph response (feels like a truck...) i know a 1000cc should drag me
around like an overpowered tractor.. my 71 ambo (850/5 speed ) will yank my
arms off.
i'm going to the ohio rally this weekend - hopefully someone there will help
me tweak it to run like a big vtwin should?

on aside note:
never been to ohio rally - i'll be the youngest one there probably - it
would be nice if someone would help me make my convert run at 110%. or if i
bring ambo = looking for 200%!
