Paul, and others,

A rear tire is constructed to handle the directional torque of accelerating the bike.
A front tire is constructed to handle the directional torque of slowing the bike when you apply the front brake, which handles most of your stopping power.
Thus, if you put a tire designated to be a rear tire on the front, you reverse the arrow of rotation so it's on "backwards".
The same if you put a tire that is designated a front on the rear.

At least that is what I have heard.
