I believe it tightens up the preload on the spring. Mine had a "clunk"
when the suspension extended (I thought the spring might have
shortened/sagged). The spring measured out to the original length...you
would think after 30 yrs it would have compressed some...maybe the
spring rate did?

Anyway, the PVC spacer tightens up the spring between the collars.
I started with a 3/4" spacer but it was a bugger it pull the fork tube
thru the top tree to bolt it down (increased fork spring tension).
I sanded the spacer down to 1/2" the next time I had the forks off to
ease getting'em back in.

I started with 40w fork oil but went to 10w fork to soften them a
little. It runs and drives very nicely. There is a progressively wound
fork spring for $150.00/pr that is supposed to run very nicely....maybe
next time!
