Hi Mike,
Mine is an early '69 with the V700 style heads also. I've set mine at
.006 and .010 for the last 36,000 miles and don't find them abnormally
loud, even with the noise reflecting off the police fairing. Of course,
I do wear earplugs nearly all the time when riding. Never was sure which
set of specs to use, but prefer a bit of ticking (like a fine watch :-))
to no noise/too tight and damage. Veddy Interesting! Cheers,

Charlie

when I noticed - low and behold! - that the valve
clearance for the V700 heads is MUCH TIGHTER then on
the Ambo heads! I had no idea. The Ambo clearances are
.006" and .010", whereas the V700 clearances are .004"
and .006". I verified this in the factory manual. I
have been adjusting the valves way too loosely. I
imagine that would account for some of the valve
tappet noise. I sure hope I have not significantly
accelerated valve train wear. I've been doing it wrong
for 19,000 miles.
