I have not done it in ages.... but off the top of my head....
First mask out the area that is nice chrome and will stay chrome with a few layers of sandpaper proof tape (ie not plastic tape that sand paper shreads) to protect that area from harm while the prep is been done.
Then sand it back to get ALL the shine off. NOT GRIND as that will do to much damage. (harder chrome top layer and soft under layers would cause it to end up digging holes)
I have good eye hand control after years of sanding so I could sand very close to the edge without cutting it.
I would take my time and take off quite a bit of the chrome and nickel undeneath.....
So when I as finished... you would have a steel tank with "feathered" layers of nickel then non shiny chrome coming up to the area that is masked out.
Probably about 3 mm of chrome amd 4 more of nickel coming away from the masked area?
I would make sure the surface is not to badly scratched by the process as the paint will sink into any underlying imperfections over time.
Then redo the masking as the edge will not be perfect. Dedo it with "fine line tape" (plastic)... then clean down the tank with degresser like prepsol and apply a thin spray coat of a VERY good two pack etch primer.
With things like this you do NOT want to put to much paint on. As the edge build up of paint is not wanted (same with frames as it helps them not chip around bolt heads etc).
Then a good two pack undercoat surfacer.... again only as much as is needed to get the suface right... any more is wasted and will cause a big edge down to the chrome and shrinkage problems later on.
Then if it was mine I would leave it for at least a week to fully harden and do all it's shrinking.
and it.... RE mask it again. Sand it down....
Then apply just enough colour to cover and a two coats of clear.
Simple. lol
I HAVE to say here that I am a perfectionsit bastard and most painters would laugh at the lengths I would go to and say it's not needed.
They would be right...... as they don't have to look at it for years to come!. I like to do things right.

I am a painter... getting paint to stick to chrome is all about getting the surface right.
Put straight onto shine chrome any paint will fall off.
With the right roughing up and reperation it should be fine.
I would get a second opionon or call an auto paint company and talk to their technical people to get the facts.
Their is nothing like getting the info direct from the people who make the stuff.

I had mine painted last year (solid black with metallic gold striping and decals) My painter (Dave Hirata, Lowell Body Shop, Lowell, Indiana) said it was no problem at all. I'm not a painter, only relaying personal experience. So far it's only been a year but it looks like the day I picked it up. If you would like to see it I would be glad to e-mail you a picture or two.

I've been talking to my painter, and he claims that new paints do not stick well to chrome (Guzzi tanks) due to the lack of lead in modern paints. Anybody have any input? He wants to use the a chrome contact paper for knee panels and I think that will look like s**t with a ridge around panel...........thanks in advance for the input. Brett in Indiana
