Jason,

I also have determined that my grabbiness is clutch related. I can't imagine
that it can be anything else after inspections and characteristics of the
offending annoyance.

Since I have pulled the engine twice and can make no visual recognition of
the problem I am going to continue to ride the old girl....be aware of any
changes in the grabbiness and deal with it if it gets worse. After 500+
miles nothing has changed and the bike continues to run well.

One thing that I didn't do when the engine was out was to heat the
intermediate plate (where I think the problem lay) and see if the thing
warped. Right now...when I start the bike cold and pull away there is no
grabbiness in the clutch at all. Only after it gets warm does the problem
occur. Since the intermediate plate is the thinest piece of metal in the
assembly I am thinking that is the one most likely to warp.

Other thoughts include a problem with the throw out bearing/push rod but I
think that I would have seen the problem get worse in a short period of
time. I also think the problem may be in either the clutch plates hanging up
in the input hub or the intermediate plate getting hung up in the flywheel.
Not a lot of movement of the pieces in there though.

How can this problem be fixed? The only real way would be to take a complete
clutch assembly from a good working bike and replace the whole unit. If the
grabbiness stopped then the problem would be isolated to the assembly and
then you could start looking at the individual components. Sounds like fun
but until I am ready to put the White Eldo on the market I won't bother.

OK.....long winded but interesting discussion. I will have a look at the
play in the clutch cable....Thanks...Ian

p.s. I saw your post for the Breva.....wanna trade a Loop for it? :-) I bet
the bike is fun to ride.

Ian, this may be of interest to you since we were sharing notes.
A while back I posted a problem I was having. The short version is that
the transmission occasionally makes a bunch of noise and it sounds like
the gears are slamming together.
I have come to the conclusion that it is entirely clutch related. I
adjusted the clutch lever at the transmission and it's better, but it
still grabs a bit (occasionally). I have to take every bit of slack out
of the cable to get it to operate properly. Sigh.
A search on this list for "grabby" reveals that this is a fairly common
problem, so for now, I'll live with it. Although its not really very
grabby- just enough to make a nasty racket.
I'm really hoping that I don't develop the same problem as Tom Short
(search for "grabby clutch explored", 6/25/03). Dude!
cheers,
Jason
