Yes, the Marelli and Bosch are interchangeable. The new Valeos are
lighter and more powerful, but have the solenoid on the top. It is my
understanding that they fit, but are much tighter than the originals
that position the solenoid on the bottom.
Some old Fiat starter ought to work, as it is widely reported that they
are the same. But I've never tried to find the exact replacement.
As for a kick-start loop frame...seems a bit masochistic to me! But it
would be fun to try.
As for your current Marelli starter, I would first try dissassembling,
cleaning and lubricating, and reassembling. You might find that it is
revived (and your nervousness relieved). Alternatively, I would take it
to a local small-shop rebuilder to put things back in order. Either of
these will probably be the cheapest routes to go.
