The tips are split into four sections. There's a lip on the end that
fits behind the bearing race, and a threaded spreader that you tighten
up, locking the tip behind the race. Once it's tight, the slide hammer
whacks the sucker out in about 5 whacks. I don't think there's enough
room back there to use a normal 3 or 4-jaw puller.

Interesting...I'm always looking for better/different tools to help pull

bearings, etc.

Could you explain how the tips work? The pictures online aren't very
clear (neither is Harbor Freight's description). And, since this is a
special order item (at least for my local store), I can't go look at it
in person, either.

Actually, the one I bought is more specialized:

I used the same tool, Fred...and found it useful for other tasks, too.

What you need is a blind bearing puller. I got one from Harbor Freight.

Hey all,
I have a swingarm pivot bearing that feels rough enough that I plan to
change it. Looking at it I'm hoping to be able to pull the race with a
slide hammer provided I can get something behind the race to attach the
slide hammer to. Anyone out there been down this road? If there is a
"right" way to do this I'd like to figure out what it is.
Thanks,
Rob
