Hi Bruce and Greg,

Yes, I've done this before also. But I had hoped to find a ready made
shop quality tool. The problem with a socket is the closed end - I won't
be able to use the driveshaft coupler I welded a handle on to hold the
shaft from turning while tightening the ring nut. I'd have to use a
socket modified as you suggest, then cut the square drive part off and
weld a handle on. Guess I'm feeling a bit lazy as winter approaches!

Or do you use an air impact to remove and install the nut?
Alternatively, I guess you could put the trans in gear, hold the clutch
hub from turning and tighten the nut. In any case it'll need to be a
deep well socket. Thanks!

Charlie

Charlie,
I've made two ring nut sockets - one for my Alfa and one for the
Eldo. I bought a cheap 1/2" drive socket from AdvancedAuto which had
the
correct (or near correct) OD. I marked the socket for the pins and took
my
right angle grinder and removed 95% of the waste. Then used a hand file
to
get it to fit just right. It took only 30 minutes to make the tool once
I
had the socket.

I'm not much of an advocate of a punch (use a brass rod) and hammer
but they do come in handy.

I'm looking for a good quality tool to remove/install the ring nut (with

4 notches around the circumference) on the output shaft of a 4 spd.
trans. Long ago I borrowed one from the local dealer, but he's since
closed shop. The ones on MG Cycle's site won't work because it needs to
fit over a longer shaft and I need to be able to hold the shaft as well.

Looks like the previous "mechanic" used a punch or chisel! Guess I could

make one, but who knows when I'll have the time. Any suggestions?
