after dipping it, (no doubt the gallon carb cleaner with dip basket is a
wise investment..) make sure you spray carb cleaner through all
passages/jets. i use about half a can per carb..it's cheap insurance...

Steve, what I really had in mind to tell you is first clean your carbs
with the gallon size (10 bucks) carb cleaner, the one with the little
dipping basket included. If you have two or more old motorcycles in
your life you can't spend 10 bucks better. Take your carb apart, one
at a time, take all the non metal stuff off it, including the
composite gaskets and especially the floats and soak the metal carb
parts in the carb cleaner. Including the jets. Be sure to dismantle
the accelerator pump so the good liquid can penetrate everything. Once
you have clean metal parts you can then determine if you need carb
kits. Sometimes after cleaning carb parts there is a white deposit on
the parts, especially in the bowl. Be sure to get all that dry white
deposit stuff out of there or it will flake off and clog up a jet or
sure. Bob

Steve, I am not one to tell people not to spend money as it is so good
for the economy but you may not need rebuild kits for your carbs,
unless from the outside they look really bad, then chances are you
will need a kit. One thing to check is to see that the cardboard
gaskets at the top of the square slide are in good shape, these are
often overlooked. Did Gary or anyone else talk to you about choke
cables being free and of the synched? That's a good thing to check. Bob

Thanks for the suggestions, that will give me somewhere to start on. I
did drain the oil/gas mix to change for straight oil in the Eldo. I'll
go through the carbs Bob and thanks for the tip about 1 at a time. As
to the Ambassador I'll reset the timing, "d'oh" even a rookie like me
should have done that first! Both have VHB carbs, guess I'll be
needing about 4 rebuild kits and some in-line filters, gaskets etc.,
I'll do all you suggested and then I'm sure I'll be back with more
problems. On the Ambo I re-set the valves at .15 intake/.25 exhaust,
they are on the loose side and clattering nicely.

and for Gary, you were right, I started the Eldo with the rear wheel
off and put it in gear I can both hear and feel "clunking" from the
drive line right near the u-joint, guess that will be coming up in the
near future.

Does anyone know if I can switch the entire drive line from the
Ambassador over to the Eldo without major headache's? The Eldo engine
is in much better shape as is the chassis if I could get one bike out
of the two running then I would be a lot happier while working on the
other. In either case it looks like I have some carb work to do first.
I'll get on the line to MG cycle Monday and get me some implements of
destruction.
