Hi, Steve. I agree with your idea of replacing the
condensor - I have had condensors gradually go bad,
and it can cause backfiring. Since they are cheep (I
believe any 12 volt condensor will do) and easy to
replace, it's worth a try. However, my first bet would
be a dirty carb, and my first try would be loose
exhaust nuts (since that is easiest to verify).

Regarding those exhaust nuts, you can tighten the
old-style ones up by gently using a large pipe wrench
(cushion the teeth with something if you like), and
then drill a small hole in each one and safety-wire
them so that they don't work their way loose.
