Ron:

heat and oil quench (or water quench) only works with the correct grades of
steel (do you have a scrap to test it on??). The part needs to be tempered
after that hardening, too (induced brittleness).

A "non-hardenable" steel can still be case hardened, in an oxygen-poor
environment (closed cast iron pipe, for example), by heating it in a
carbonaceous environment, easiest using "Kasenit", a commercial product.
(some folks get their jollies creating their own Kasenit from charred
leather, bone, eye of newt, etc)

A net search will get you lots of info on either method.

Guzziesti,
I have machined a pivot pin from a good grade of steel (I ground it down
from a larger pin) I could feel the metal get softer after about the first
.020" was cut away. I'd like to surface harden my new pin for wear
resistance. I seem to remember to heat to a cherry red & plunge into oil,
but I've learned not to trust my memory. What's correct?
Thanks,
Ron Komoroski
