Steve, I'm not sure about too tight with no shim, maybe worn out. I know it's a dumb question but have you pulled both bearings to be sure the shim is not on the other side, check closely as sometimes the shim sticks to the bearing inner race and looks like part of the bearing. I add shim until I can pick up the dismounted wheel by pushing hard on the bearing inner races and spin the wheel freely without binding or feeling loose. If I can stop the wheel by pressing hard on the bearing inner races then it is too tight and I add shim. Then mount the wheel and check it after you have tightened the axle nut. If it is tight and will not spin freely then add shim and check again, if it is loose and will wobble from side to side then remove shim and try again. This has worked well for me more then once.

Joe,
I just figured that out today while I was playing around with it, what do it mean though when there are no shims? Maybe mein bearings ist too tight? Ran out of time today cause I went to ride so tomorrow after work I'll repack them and check it out.
Thanks

Steve if you have too much play in the wheel bearings you would need to remove a shim to tighten the bearings up. The shims fit between the two wheel bearings with the spacer. Add more shim to make the bearings loose, remove shim to tighten them up. If yours are too loose you can repair it without additional shims.

Going through this rear end on my El Dorado and there is definitely too much play in the rear wheel bearings. I ordered parts for the Ambassador from MG cycle today and tried to get some shims for adjusting wheel bearings, guzzi part # 95100715, and 95100727 but they were out. anyone know where I can get some? there are none at all in the Eldo and it definitely has too much play (Thanks to Greg Bender for the suggestion on how to check this without having to put the wheel back on!) Also was wondering if anyone knows a source for the little screw which holds the points down. As in lots of old engines, the one I have is pretty chingered up and hard to tighten. Thanks for all the suggestions as to how to solve my backfiring problem, I am going through them all 1 by 1 and hope to have it sorted out soon.
