Guzziesti,
My thanks to all who replied to my query about hardening my homemade pin.
The whole process is obviously a lot more involved than the heat-n-dunk I
had in mind. The big problem is not knowing exactly what grade of steel I'm
dealing with. I ended up doing a "file test" of the homemade pin and a stock
Guzzi pin intended for the same application. The feel of the file cutting
the metal & the scratch it made was similar enough that I installed my
homemade part, confident that it will hold up as well as the stock part.
Several of the replies suggested that heat-n-dunk could have made the pin
softer or brittle (depending on temperature).
Thanks again to all for preventing a possible screw-up on my part. How did
we ever get along before this list?
