Heh Heh,

There were, oh I don't know 6 of us or so back in June. Sam from this
list was there. We were heading out to The Gilmore Car Museum for an
annual vintage bike show. The museum is north of Battle Creek and
Kalamazoo & almost smack dab in the middle of both. It's only a couple
hundred mile trip. Anyways we were riding some great roads (only a few
left around here). We got maybe within 50-60 miles or so of the museum
and the bike starts cutting out. Oh great, what now??

I reached for the petcock and give that a turn, no effect. As I start
looking around to see what might of fell off:-), I see the fire from the
carb. The S&S was leaking a bit of gas, sure it was irritating but it
was just gas, not like it was waste from Fermi(nuke power plant). Famous
last words, at some point we all have spoke...

Sure enough the damn carb was on fire, eating all my gas. The bike dies
and I coast to the side of the road. My "buddy" that sold me the thing
was on my left, we were out front so everyone pulls over. Confusion sets
in.. My pal & I are batting at the flame trying to put it out, TURN OFF
THE GAS if this ever happens to you. After we accomplish cutting off the
gas, One of the folks that was with us came over with a towel (Sam? )
which I wrapped around the air cleaner and snuffed the fire.

Limped the thing down the road, at which point my pal & I told everyone
to go one without us. There happened to be a country hardware store down
the road. We were stopped at a liqure store, so at least we had beer.
The hardware store had just about everything. My pal picked up air
filter element from who knows what, a little roadside modification and
back on the road.

In the end I tried adapting a CV carb planning on junking that S & S.
The mods were not working. In the end I decided to check the cam timing.
This was off. Which in turn was throwing the valves off, which
interfered with the intake? Since all the gas was not being consumed by
the engine it had to go somewhere, which was out the wrong side of the
carb, onto the air filter. The filter element got saturated and ignited.
How did it ignite? Don't know. I found the correct cam position and the
problem went away.. One problem down..

Kev
