Hi Ted,

You'll get a lot of ideas on the jumpy clutch, but here is what I would
do.

First, be sure that your clutch cable is lubed properly and not hanging
up somewhere inside the sheath. Also be sure it is adjusted properly.

If that doesn't fix things, then take the clutch apart and have a look
at the different pieces. Especially check for spline wear on the clutch
hub, etc. Also check for warping or uneven wear/heat marks on the
intermediate plate. Finally look at the clutch plates themselves (new
thickness is 8 mm, Guzzi recommends replacement at 7.5 mm). While you
are in there, you might as well replace the seals.

You may want to try the kerosene/mineral spirits treatment, but I think
that the result will only be temporary. I'd just dive in and be prepared
to spend a little bit of money on replacement parts.

Good luck!

Well, I finally took about a half block ride on the '74 Eldo I bought in

1997.
After burning some of it in 97 I mostly rewired it, then moved away
until
2002. I just started working on it this summer and rode it yesterday.

At first I thought there was something wrong when I gave it the gas and
felt
the weird sideways torque action.

I need to tune the carbs and probably set the timing still. But I have
one
question I'm not sure about. After sitting for so long I think some of
the
clutch plates are stuck together as the clutch is VERY jumpy. No matter
how
carefully I let out it just grabs and takes off. Is there a remedy for
this
(the kerosene treatment?) or should the clutch free up after a little
riding?

Thanks for all the help everyone (especially Greg Bender for your
website)

I'll post pictures soon.
Ted
