John's right, simple stuff first. A dirty air filter would cause a rich
condition, how old are the plugs? It might be time to change them. I
would start there. Might just be the simple.
The one & half turns is considered a starting point for the carb
adjustment, If changing the basics still don't do the trick try tweeking
that screw, this will probably have to be done anyway depending on the
type of filter you get.

Hi, all. I pulled my spark plugs to do a valve
adjustement, and the left plug was really fouled. It's
never been that way before. I checked the timing, and
it was not far off. I checked the setting of the idle
jet screw, and it was one and a half turns, which is
according to the book. I haven't dug into the carb
yet, but I noticed the Uni foam air filters look
pretty deteriorated. Do you think that might be the
cause of the problem? Perhaps dirty air is getting in?

Those of you that are not running the stock filter
box, what are you using for air filters, and how well
is it working for you?

Thanks for the info.,
