it's an awesome tool - even if you don't get anything machined, you can
get close to real world cost quotes without the hassle of calling anyone
up...

Awhile back Bruce Giller told the list about a CAD package (eMachine) that is relatively easy to use, so I tried it out. I needed a seat post for a bicycle, so I used eMachine to draw up a one inch solid aluminum rod, 20 inches long. The bicycle end needed a one inch dia post and the seat needed a 7/8 inch post, so I turned one end to 7/8 inches, down 3 inches from the other end. Chamfered both ends to 45 degrees. Simple enough.

When I clicked 'analyze' the program suggested I specify a coating since it is aluminum AND to drill a small hole in one end to hold the post while it is being plated (clear anodize). Very cool package. I submitted it for pricing. mmmmmmm, it came back with a price of $27 per 100 (or $157,27 for unit quantities). This is probably normal, but a little steep for me.

But did I mention the program can also export your work to an AutoCAD .dxf file? Everything but the 3D view. That 3D view is handy when you make a change in the drawing and want to know what impact it has on the end product. When choosing metals, there is a properties chart to view, for hardness, machinability, weldability, corrosion resistance ...

Took me about an hour to run through the audio tutorials - well worth the time (for me anyway). The link is:

click on the orange 'get started' button. Its hard to believe this package is free.

Got a Guzzi part that NLA ?? Never fear, emachineshop is here !

http://emachineshop.com/

From the AP news report -

"Programs for computer-aided design, or CAD, have been around for decades,
but eMachineShop.com appears to be the first service that checks whether a
design can be made, tells the customer how much it will cost. If the
customer wants
the item the design goes to a "real world" machine shop for manufacturing.

The key to this enterprise is free design software provided by eMachineShop
that aims to be simple enough for hobbyists and other non-engineers."

One downloads the design software, draws the part (including manufacturing
feedback), and orders the finished product. The design is sent to one of
several
machine shops contracting with emachineshop.com."
