Hey Paul, Why would Guzzi design a static chain tensioner? Why not use a
roller tensioner? Cost? Doesn't make sense to me to have a chain rub
against hard rubber, when for three dollars more you can have the chain roll
over a roller. Bob

Ted,

That piece you slide is your tensioner. It should have a hard rubber block
on it. If it's not there or heavily worn down (grooves) then you will need a
new one along with a chain. You will also have to drop the pan and clean out
all the rubber bits floating around. The original tensioners were prone to
dissolving quickly. Don't remember when they came out with the better one
that doesn't dissolve. I believe that Guzziology does tell you how to go
about it.

Thanks for the help so far. I opened up the front of the '74 eldo (Great
Pumpkin as suggested) and there is a chain in thar. The chain is VERY loose,

it will touch the sides of the case with some left over. I'm guessing the
reason my bike isn't running is the chain slipped a link and timing got
bunged. What do I do now?

There is a little item that looks like a tensioner that slides right to left

if you loosen the two bolts, but it doesn't look like it would do anything
even if the chain were already tight. I slid it all the way in (towards the
center) and it does nothing. Is there another way of removing slack or do I
have to get a new chain?

Also I guess I'll get a book so I don't have to bother you guys with this
stuff (like how to align all the gears correctly and get the chain in place
etc...) Does guzziology cover all this stuff or should I get a shop manual?

Thanks for any and all help on this stuff.

Ted
