Charlie,
my parents just bought a Kodak easyShare (forget what model) for thier trip to WA. I haven't seen the pics yet, or had to help them put them on the 'puter, but the use is easy.
I personally bought a Fuji Finepix 3.1 Mpxl and it works nice. You can select the file size, it has a 6x optical zoom, and can also take closeups in Macro mode. When I bougth it, just before the Detroit Redwings started the playoffs last year, it was about $170. I think it's cheaper now.
Anyway, it can take better pictures than I am able to hold still for. The software is OK, it comes with a USB cable and a video cable, so you can d/l pics to the computer and show the pics on the mem from a TV.
I do also like the Mavica with the option to save to a floppy, then you don't have to deal with cables and card readers. It's especially nice if you have an older computer without USB ports.

Later,
Matt
