Tom,
being a "po' boy" and not wanting to wait 3 years to ride my Eldo I have the 3yr plan. 1st cleaned and polished everything as best I could and fixed all the mechanical problems that were holding me back from riding it. New-clutch, seals, gaskets, cables, exhaust nuts, headers, u-joint, v. regulator, tires, fluids, filters, points, plugs, condenser, ignition wiring, fuel lines, rebuild carbs, put it all back together and ride it 'til next winter (this phase now 85% completed, should have her back together in a week or so and running not long after, "knock on wooden head"). Phase 2, rebuild eng/trans, install RAM clutch, electronic ignition, some other few goodies and ride it 'til next winter. Then Phase 3, Powder coat frame parts, paint sheet metal, new chrome chassis parts, new wiring harness and then good to go.
Sure it requires tearing the whole bike down every winter for 3 years but I need the practice :0) and I do almost all my paying work in the summer anyway.

Fix-Polish-Paint to your satifaction the first time and avoid the
shoulda-coulda-woulda later on. Nothing worse than disassembling the
second time to fix stuff your were not happy with the first time.

Later,
