Interesting battery event on the '73 Eldo. I replaced the old (as in 6
or 7 years old) battery in October with a new one from Batteries Plus.
That worked fine for about 5 weeks. ....... I thought of a mechanical
failure within the battery (i.e. open circuit) but how to explain the 6+
volts measured between terminals?

No big deal but I am puzzled.

Further comment: Of all my bikes, the Eldo is my clear favorite. I
have owned 4 Moto Guzzis, including an '03 Stone, but the simplicity,
style, and ride of the Eldo beats 'em all.

Jack -

Had almost the same thing happen with a brand-new sealed AGM battery
last year. New battery, did great for 5 months, then suddenly went
dead. Figured it couldn't be the battery, went looking for all the
usual culprits. Finally put the old battery back in, and everything was
great. It WAS the brand-new battery, and it was reading 8 volts best
case. No telling what an internal short or a bad cell might do to the
reading....

I sent it back to the distributor, and they sent me a new one, and later
wrote me to tell me that the old one was in fact defective. So it can
happen with the best of batteries; I'm guessing that the failure rate
must be about 5% from what I read.

By the way, half the battle's won when you have a dealer you can work
with. In this case over the internet from WWW.BATTERYMART.COM -they
were easy to talk to and made it right with no fine-print crap about
warrantees and pro-rated value etc., just sent me new one and paid
shipping both ways, then followed up with an explanation.
