Just got a chance to check out the photos on Greg Benders excellent web site pertaining to installing an car alternator on a Loopframe Guzzi. Greg Fields is right, that's not his bike, it's mine ("Maynard" from Wisconsin).
Since the Nationals at the Black Hills I have redesigned the way that I mounted the alternator. I looked at Greg Fields bike and liked the idea that Bob Nolan and Greg came up with to mount the alternator much better than my original idea for mounting. Now instead of the alternator mounting lugs sitting almost vertical I have them sitting horizontal (one pointing at each cylinder). The alternator rests on the cradle at the front of the motor like the generator did, and the bracket that I made bolts to the block at the original generator mounting holes plus a tab that goes to the front distributor hold down bolt. The alternator pivot lug mounts to the right and on the left side I made a strap that runs from a timing cover bolt to the mounting lug on the alternator. By mounting the alternator this way the belt cover doesn't need to be cut off. This isn't an exact copy of Greg/Bob's mounting system, but I had to add some of my own touches! <g> This makes for a very substantial mount for the alternator.
As a side note some of you have been discussing the pulley adapter that Moto International has for using the motor or crankshaft from a later model Guzzi with the tapered nose crank. You may all know this already, but this adapter will only work with the Loopframe timing cover as the crank seal diameters are different between the new covers (smaller) and the Loops (larger). I also spent a very long time waiting for my adapter when I ordered it (March to August). Good luck to anyone waiting for one. Make lots of phone calls and let them know you're tired of waiting!
Later "Maynard"
